How In-Browser Typing Speed Testing Works
Typing Speed Test (WPM & Accuracy) runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. There is no sign-up, and whatever you type or open here is processed on your device instead of being sent to a server.
Measure Your Words per Minute and Typing Accuracy
Benchmark your typing speed in real time with timed typing exercises directly inside your browser. The test shows your Words per Minute (counting only correctly typed characters), your accuracy and the time left, and marks wrong characters in red, all on-device.
Mobile and Desktop Touch Typing Support
The typing box asks the browser to turn off autocorrect, autocapitalization, autocomplete and spellcheck, so phone keyboards are less likely to change what you type; some keyboard apps may still show suggestions.
Standardized 5-Character Word Calculation
WPM uses the common convention that one 'word' is five characters (spaces included) and counts only correctly typed characters, so treat the score as a practice guide, not a certified result. Each test is one short quote from a small set and ends when you reach its end or after 60 seconds, so take several tests and look at your typical result rather than your best.
How to Check Your WPM in Under a Minute
Click the typing box and start typing the passage shown; the 60-second clock starts with your first key. The test ends when you reach the last character or when the clock runs out, and your words per minute are worked out from the time you actually took, so you do not have to type for a full minute. Each passage is a single sentence, which makes this a quick timed typing test rather than a long exam: take it three or four times and use your average for a steadier picture of your typing speed. Press New Quote for a different passage. Errors are marked in red as you type and are not counted towards your speed.
WPM Benchmarks: What Is a Good Typing Speed?
When you finish the passage, the test gives your speed one of the ratings below. They are this test's own rough guide, not an official standard, and accuracy matters as much as raw speed: a fast score with many red characters usually means slowing down will make you quicker overall.
| Words per minute | Rating shown by this test |
|---|---|
| Under 30 WPM | Beginner |
| 30 to 49 WPM | Average typist |
| 50 to 69 WPM | Fast |
| 70 to 89 WPM | Very fast |
| 90 WPM or more | Professional speed |
Gross WPM, Net WPM and How This Test Counts
Timed typing tests often run for 1, 3 or 5 minutes and report net WPM, which takes a whole word off your speed for every mistake you leave uncorrected. This test times one short passage against a 60-second limit and counts only the characters you type correctly, so a mistake costs you one character rather than a whole word, and its score sits between gross and net WPM. The table shows all three for the same attempt: 100 characters typed in one minute, 5 of them wrong.
| Score | How it is counted | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Gross WPM | Every character typed, divided by 5, per minute | 20 WPM |
| Net WPM | Gross WPM minus one word for each uncorrected mistake per minute | 15 WPM |
| This test | Only correctly typed characters, divided by 5, per minute | 19 WPM |
Why processing in your browser matters
Many online tools upload your files or text to a server to process them. This one does the work on your computer or phone, so your data is not sent to us or stored anywhere else. That lowers the risk when you work with confidential material, although you should still follow your organisation's own rules. Read how this works in our Privacy Policy.
- No uploads: files are opened and saved on your device, so there is no upload or download wait.
- No account: nothing to sign up for or install.
- Free to use: no subscriptions or paywalls.
